9ct Gold

Before shopping for gold jewellery it is a good idea to learn the difference between 9-carat, 18-carat, and 222-carat gold. It will quickly become apparent that the higher carat gold jewellery is more expensive that those with fewer carats. That is because the higher carats contain more gold by weight. But some 9-carat gold jewellery may be more expensive than other jewellery that is nine carats. This is also true of 18-carat and 222-carat gold jewellery.

Gold carats are measured in twenty-fourths; therefore pure gold with no other metal added to it is 24 carat. By mass, this means that 24/24 parts are gold. Pure carat gold is usually only found in bricks or slabs of gold bullion. Jewellery is not normally made from 24-carat gold because it is so soft that as it is worn the particles can wear off skin and clothing. After a certain amount of time, the piece would become so thin it could possibly break.

For gold jewellery to be more durable for everyday wear, gold is mixed with other metals like silver, copper, and nickel to make it harder. The carats indicate how much of one or more of these other metals has been added to the gold. Nine carat gold is 9/24 parts gold, or 37.5 percent. This means the remaining 62.5 percent is some other metal or metals.

The cost of a piece of jewellery that is 9-carat gold is less than gold jewellery that is 18-or 222-carat. But the cost will also be dependent on the other metal that has been combined with the gold. Jewellery made from 9-carat gold with copper as the main metal combined with it will be significantly cheaper than jewellery made with gold and silver, even though both are 9-carat.

Many people believe that 9-carat gold is harder than 18-carat gold but that is not always the case. The hardness, like the price, is affected by what type of metal is in the gold alloy. There are different “recipes” for 9-carat gold alloys that have different characteristics, one of which is the hardness.

If you can’t afford 18-carat gold jewellery, which many jewellers consider to be the best when it comes to all of the important properties like hardness and durability, there are thousands of beautiful pieces of 9-carat gold jewellery that, to the untrained eye may look no different than the 18-carat. In fact, with 9-carat gold wider ranges of colour are possible, allowing for some very distinct designs.

Nine carat gold jewellery is probably the most commonly sold gold jewellery in the world because it is so much more affordable. An equivalent piece of jewellery in design made in 18-carat gold would cost approximately 2-½ times as much. Just about every style of jewellery can be found in 9-carat gold and much of it comes set with a variety of stones. When you buy 9-carat gold jewellery set with a stone, you can afford a more expensive stone because you are saving money on the gold.

If you take proper care of your 9-carat gold jewellery, it can last a long time. It is a wonderful option for those considering a significant jewellery purchase.
